Large format print: bleeds, scale and resolution explained
How to set up large format print artwork properly — the scale, bleed and resolution rules that decide whether your file prints clean or pixelated.
Large format print is unforgiving in one specific way: everything that's slightly off at A4 becomes obviously wrong at 4 metres wide. A 2-pixel misalignment is invisible on a flyer and a banner-killer on a shop front.
Here's how to set up large format artwork so it survives the jump from screen to two-storey vinyl.
Scale: build small, print big
Almost nobody builds large format at 1:1. The file would be enormous, the dpi maths would be a nightmare, and most software starts choking on artboards over ~5 metres.
The convention is 1:10 scale for most large format work — same as OOH. A 3000 × 2000 mm banner is built at 300 × 200 mm.
The exceptions:
- Vehicle wraps — often built at 1:4 or 1:5 because curves and panel joins matter
- Wallpaper and graphics with very fine detail — sometimes 1:2 to preserve text
- Anything under 1 metre — usually built at 1:1
When in doubt, ask the printer. They'll tell you the scale they want and what to multiply resolution by.
Resolution: 300dpi at scale
The rule is 300 dpi at the document size you're working at. So at 1:10 scale, that's effectively 30 dpi at full print size — which is fine, because nobody views a billboard from 30 cm away.
Closer viewing distances need higher resolution. Rough guide:
- Viewed from 5 m+ (billboards, building wraps) → 30 dpi at full size
- Viewed from 1–2 m (exhibition graphics, pull-up banners) → 100 dpi at full size
- Viewed from arm's length (POS, retail signage) → 150 dpi at full size
- Touchable distance (wall graphics, wayfinding) → 200 dpi at full size
Build at 1:10 with 300 dpi and you're covered for billboard viewing. Build closer if the work will be seen up close.
Bleed: bigger than you think
Web-to-print and litho jobs use 3 mm bleed. Large format is in a different league:
- Pull-up banners — 100 mm bleed at the bottom (it disappears into the cassette)
- Vinyl banners with eyelets — 25 mm bleed all round
- Building wraps — varies wildly; ask
- Vehicle wraps — 50 mm minimum, often more on bumpers and around handles
- Mesh banners — 25 mm bleed plus reinforced edge tape allowance
Safe area scales with bleed. Keep logos and critical type 50–100 mm inside the trim at full size, not the 3 mm you'd use on a leaflet.
Colour: total ink coverage matters
Inkjet substrates absorb ink differently to coated litho stock. Push total ink coverage too high and you get:
- Drying problems and set-off
- Cracking when vinyl is stretched over curves
- Bleed-through on mesh and translucent materials
Common total ink coverage limits:
- Solvent inkjet on vinyl — 240–280%
- Latex inkjet — 270–300%
- UV flatbed on rigid substrates — 300–340%
- Fabric / dye-sub — 240% (often less)
Build rich blacks accordingly. C40 M30 Y30 K100 (200%) is a safe large-format rich black. C70 M60 Y60 K100 (290%) is asking for trouble on vinyl.
File format
Most large format printers want:
- PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 flattened
- CMYK only
- Fonts outlined (safer than embedded for printers running older RIPs)
- Single page per file — multi-page PDFs cause RIP confusion
Some printers prefer packaged InDesign or layered PSDs for vehicle wraps and complex installs. Ask first.
The pre-flight you can't skip
Before you send a large format file:
- Zoom to 100% in your PDF viewer and scroll the entire artwork. Pixelation, banding, weird gradients — all visible at 100%.
- Output preview — check separations and total ink coverage.
- Overprint preview on — catch any white objects accidentally set to overprint.
- Open in a second application — Acrobat and a different PDF viewer. RIPs are picky.
