    What is an Artworker?

What a senior artworker actually does, why brands and agencies hire freelance artworkers, and what to look for when you do.

If you've ever signed off a beautiful piece of design and then watched it come back from print looking… not quite right, you've already met the gap a freelance senior artworker fills.

What a senior artworker actually does

A senior artworker is the production craftsperson who sits between approved creative and final print or digital output. The design is signed off — the artworker's job is to make sure it actually works once it leaves the studio.

    That means:

    • Building artwork to the printer's or media owner's exact spec
    • Managing colour, separation and proofing
    • Embedding barcodes, regulatory marks and legal copy correctly
    • Versioning across SKUs, sizes, languages and markets
    • Preparing print-ready PDFs and the working files behind them
    • Catching the things that would otherwise come back as a reprint

Junior artworkers can do the mechanics. Senior artworkers anticipate the problems before they happen — and quietly fix the things that would otherwise become very expensive.

Why hire a freelance senior artworker?

Three reasons come up again and again:

    1. Capacity, on demand. In-house teams flex with the workload. Freelance artworkers absorb the spikes without the cost of a permanent hire.
    2. Specialism. Packaging, OOH and large format are different disciplines. A senior freelancer brings the deep production knowledge most generalists don't.
    3. Independence. A good freelance artworker has no skin in the political game — they care about getting the file right, not the office dynamics around it.

    What to look for

When you're briefing a freelance senior artworker, look for:

    • Years in production, not just years at a desk. Print catches you out in ways software design never does.
    • Direct printer / media owner experience. Someone who has shipped to JCDecaux, Clear Channel, Smurfit Kappa or DS Smith already knows the spec quirks.
    • A clear amend trail. Senior artworkers don't lose track of versions.
    • Communication. The best work happens when scope, timing and amends are confirmed in writing up front.

    When not to hire one

If what you actually need is design — concepting, layout decisions, brand work — that's a different role. A senior artworker will execute brilliantly against an approved design. They're not the right person to invent that design from scratch.
