What is rich black and when should you use it
The difference between flat black and rich black in CMYK print — and why choosing the wrong one costs you on press.
A solid black rectangle printed with K100 doesn't look black. It looks charcoal — thin, slightly see-through, with a brown or purple edge where the eye picks up the colour of the paper underneath.
That's because single-channel black ink, at full strength, is just one of four inks hitting the sheet. It has no depth.
Rich black fixes this.
What rich black actually is
Rich black is a black built from a combination of CMYK channels. Instead of relying on K alone, you add percentages of cyan, magenta and yellow underneath.
A common rich-black build for coated stock is:
- C40 M30 Y30 K100
On uncoated stock, where ink spreads and total ink limits are tighter, a leaner build like C30 M20 Y20 K100 is safer.
The result is a dense, neutral black that looks properly black to the eye — not washed out, not colour-cast, just solid.
When to use rich black
Large solid areas
Background panels, footer bars, heavy type blocks, dark packaging panels — anywhere black covers a sizeable area. K100 on its own will look weak and uneven.
Big display type
Headlines, logos, pull quotes at large sizes. Rich black gives them visual weight.
Photographic composites
When a black element sits inside a photograph or illustration, rich black helps it match the density of the surrounding image.

Small body copy
This is the big one. Rich black is four inks, and four inks on tiny type misregister. The smallest shift between plates turns sharp text into a fuzzy shadow.
Body copy, captions, terms and conditions, ingredients lists — all of these should stay at K100 only.
Fine lines, hairlines, rules
Anything under roughly 0.25pt in weight. Registration tolerance on press is typically around 0.05mm. Four-colour hairlines don't survive it.
Knockout text on a dark background
If black text knocks out through a rich-black background, the text area is effectively unprinted paper. When the surrounding background is four inks thick, the white text can look pink or grey at the edges because the background inks spread into the gap.

A rich-black build of C40 M30 Y30 K100 is 200% total area coverage. That's well within most coated-stock limits (typically 300–340%).
But push it too far — C80 M70 Y70 K100 = 320% — and you risk:
- Smudging and set-off in the delivery pile
- Drying problems, especially on coated stock
- Cracking on fold lines
Always check your printer's stated TAC before locking in a rich-black formula.

Rich black is not "more black." It's the right black for the job.
Use it where density and visual weight matter. Avoid it anywhere registration accuracy is critical. And always build your black to the stock and press you're printing on — not to what looks right on screen.
