Why the same CMYK values can look completely different in print
Identical ink values, four different results. A plain-English guide to substrates, ICC profiles and the reasons your printed colour shifts press to press.
You build a brand colour in Illustrator. C50 M40 Y40 K10. A nice, considered grey-blue. You send it to two different printers — same artwork, same values — and the proofs come back looking like cousins, not twins. One's cooler, one's warmer, one feels slightly muddy.
Nothing went wrong. CMYK values aren't a colour. They're a recipe — and the result depends on who's cooking, what ingredients they're using, and what plate it lands on.
Here's why.
CMYK is instructions, not a colour
RGB describes light. A hex value on a calibrated screen will look broadly the same on the next calibrated screen.
CMYK describes how much of each ink to lay down. The actual colour you see depends on a long chain of physical things:
- The paper (its whiteness, warmth, absorbency, coating)
- The ink set (standard process, low-migration, soy-based, eco)
- The press (offset, digital toner, inkjet, flexo)
- The press condition that day (temperature, humidity, ink film thickness)
- The lighting you view it under
Change any of those and the same recipe gives you a different dish.
The substrate is the biggest variable
Paper isn't a neutral canvas — it's the loudest voice in the room.
- Coated gloss white reflects light cleanly. Colours look bright, saturated, sharp.
- Uncoated absorbs ink. The dots spread (dot gain), so colours go darker and slightly muddier than the on-screen build.
- Cream / off-white stocks have a warm base, so anything you print picks up that warmth — your cool grey leans beige.
- Kraft and recycled stocks have a brown or grey base. There's no white ink in standard four-colour print, so the paper is your white — and a brown "white" pulls every colour towards earthy.
Same CMYK file. Four wildly different results, before anyone's even talked about the press.
ICC profiles are how we plan for this
An ICC profile is a small file that describes how a specific combination of press, ink and paper actually behaves. Industry-standard ones include:
- FOGRA39 / FOGRA51 — coated stock, European offset
- FOGRA47 — uncoated stock
- GRACoL 2013 — coated stock, US offset
- PSO Uncoated — uncoated, ISO-based
When you soft-proof in InDesign or Photoshop and assign the right profile, you're telling your screen: show me what this file will actually look like printed on that stock with that press. It's the difference between guessing and previewing.
Always ask your printer which profile they want you to work to. They'll have a preferred one. If they don't, that's a flag.
Dot gain, ink limits and other gremlins
A few more things that move the result:
- Dot gain — ink dots physically spread on absorbent stock. A 50% tint can print as 65% on uncoated. Profiles compensate for this; raw CMYK builds don't.
- Total ink limit (TIL) — most processes cap total ink at around 300–340%. Build a "rich black" of C100 M100 Y100 K100 (400%) and you'll get smudging, set-off and drying problems.
- Rich black vs flat black — large solid blacks need a rich-black build (e.g. C40 M30 Y30 K100) to look properly deep. Body copy should stay K100 only, or it'll mis-register and look fuzzy.
- Metamerism — two colours that match under daylight can look completely different under shop lighting or LED. Critical for retail and packaging.
The viewing light matters too
Printers and brand owners use a D50 light booth (5000K, standardised) to assess proofs. Your kitchen LEDs, your phone torch and the afternoon sun all push colours in different directions. If a client says "the red looks off" while standing under warm tungsten, that's not the print — that's the room.
Quick checks before you send to print
- Ask the printer which ICC profile they want, and assign it to your document
- Soft-proof in Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop with that profile loaded
- Confirm the stock — coated vs uncoated changes everything
- Keep total ink coverage under your printer's stated TIL
- Use rich black for large solids, K100 only for small text
- For brand-critical colours, specify a Pantone spot, not a CMYK build — or ask for a wet proof on the actual stock
- Review proofs in consistent lighting, ideally daylight or a D50 booth
In short
Identical CMYK values are not a guarantee of identical colour. They're a starting point. The paper, the press, the profile and the lighting all get a vote.
The fix isn't to fight it — it's to design with the stock in mind, talk to your printer early, and trust the soft-proof more than the unprofiled screen.
